Display capture black screen on laptop

Laptop specifications:

Asus ROG G771JM

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel i7-4710HQ 2.50 GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M

I have tried the following solutions:

  • run as admin
  • run in compatibility mode
  • right click desktop shortcut > run using graphics processor > integrated
  • right click desktop shortcut > run using graphics processor > high performance
  • NVIDIA settings for specified program > integrated
  • NVIDIA settings for specified program > high performance
  • Streamlabs OBS Settings > Advanced (Video section) > uncheck “Force GPU as render device”
  • Remove “Display Capture” from sources > Log out > Exit > Run as admin > Open Streamlabs OBS > Log in > Add display capture

NOTE: Also I’ve tried all the combinations e.g. the whole list of solutions as admin and not as admin, the whole list of solutions in compatibility mode and not in compatibility mode

I have read all (to my knowledge) topics on this support forum containing the following search terms:

  • black screen +  laptop
  • black screen + display capture
  • black screen + game capture

Some notes, specifications about the problem and other thoughts:

  • On OBS Studio everything has always worked perfectly.
  • I read somewhere that display capture requires integrated and everything else requires high performance. On OBS these settings don’t matter and I can smoothly  transition between different captures without worrying about NVIDIA settings.
  • Display capture doesn’t show anything on the preview window when adding the new source
  • Game capture works perfectly (at least in preview and record, haven’t tried stream yet)

Hey @uuaapeli,

Sorry to hear you are having issues here. With laptops, you would either be able to do game capture or display capture, but not both at the same time.  To set up a display capture properly try doing these steps in this order:

1. Go to your advanced settings in Streamlabs OBS and untick “Force GPU as render device.”

2. Close out of Streamlabs OBS.

3. Go to your Streamlabs OBS advanced settings and make sure “Force GPU as render device” is not checked. <https://prnt.sc/rguh9u> Now right click Streamlabs OBS, hover over "run with graphics processor" and click "integrated graphics." <https://prnt.sc/rbq5l0>

This exact process should work for a display capture. You should also try deleting all other capture sources and then add a display capture back.

Let us know if that helps!
